Analytical Methods and Applications using the Atlas of Florida Plants and R Online

Advanced applications of the Atlas of Florida Plants and information derived from regional and global biological databases for teaching and research using R. Biological databases provide a wealth of information that is useful across and range of academic disciplines, which are the basic building blocks of meta-analyses of species’ distributions, trajectories of environmental change, and physical responses to changing global climatic conditions. Herbarium specimens and the metadata contained in their labels provides multiple layers of data points which can be utilized to build case studies for courses and contextualize research questions. This workshop will demonstrate how to retrieve, manipulate, analyze, and visualize datasets retrieved from the Atlas of Florida Plants using the R Statistical Computing Environment. Participants should have a basic understanding of the R language and GIS concepts before attending. By Andrew Beman Cavallaro, Carl Dinardo, Chris Kiahtipes, USF Libraries.
